The OSS through Java™ Initiative is a working group of industry leaders who have joined resources to speed the development of innovative OSS/BSS solutions and enable fast deployment and integration of OSS components.
It enables participants to effectively deliver OSS/J APIs aligned with the NGOSS framework based on Java™ 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EE™) technology.
Industry can use the OSS/J APIs everywhere in their Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) implementations, and that means they write outbound adapters, wrappers for the COTS implementations. In addition, OSS/J is able to efficiently reduce the integration cost, and ensure vender independence.
This middleware is the outcome of CHT NGOSS trial implementation project which is cooperated with MCN lab of CSIE department of NTU.
The project is originated for trying to use OSS/J solution to implement the NGOSS concept in the CHT MBMS service provisioning process.
* CHT is the abbreviation of Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd.
* MBMS is the abbreviation of Mobile Billing Management System. It is responsible for all mobile business and operational process for CHT.
* NTU is the abbreviation of National Taiwan University.
* CSIE is the abbreviation of Computer Science and Information Engineering.
* MCN is the abbrevation of Mobile Communication Networking. The website is http://www.pcs.csie.ntu.edu.tw/.
In the legacy provision process, a component called Order Handling (OH) is responsible for transforming customer's requests into an order (a XML format text) and submiting to the Mediation Device (MD).
The MD is also a component of MBMS and is responsible for analyzing the network elements that should be configured for the customer according to the order.
In this project, we implement the middleware for communication of OH and MD, in fact, the middleware are briefly two adapters for the two leagcy MBMS components (OH and MD).
The adapter of MD is implemented by the OSS Service Activation RI 1.1, and the adapter of OH is implemented as a client program of the RI.
In the first verision, the application just provisions 3G voice service and personal ring back tone (PRBT) service for customers.
Answer to the OSS Service Activation API questionnaire can be found here.
In the further versions, we should make the middleware to support more mobile services, update the OSS Service Activation API (JSR 89) to the OSS Order Management API (JSR 264), and join the OSS Inventory API (JSR 142) to the middleware.
